Maker Story - Deepankar

I grew up in a small village in west bengal, India , where opportunities were scarce, but my dreams were not. In 2007, I made the bold decision to move to small town in Haryana, Northern India, determined to become self-reliant and create a better future for my family. My journey began with textiles and stitching bags, but as I explored the art of weaving, I fell in love with creating dharis, throws, and bathmats. Each new product introduced me to a unique weaving technique, sparking my curiosity and deepening my passion for craftsmanship. Among all my creations, cushion covers hold a special place in my heart. Their intricate patterns challenge my skills, and their smaller size makes them particularly rewarding to complete.

In the beginning, life was uncertain, and business was unpredictable. But everything changed in 2011 when working with local partners bought steady orders brought stability to my life, giving me the financial independence I had dreamed of. This stability empowered me to go beyond just supporting myself—I was able to provide work to over 150 artisans, many of whom come from underprivileged backgrounds. Together, we’ve built a thriving community of creators, united by our love for traditional craftsmanship.

One of my proudest achievements has been building a home for my family in Panipat, where we now live together. My work has also allowed me to provide for my two children. Ensuring a bright future for them is my greatest motivation, and my steady income enables me to invest in their education and coaching. Watching them grow and thrive is the greatest reward of all.

When I’m not weaving, I cherish the time spent with my family. Whether it’s watching a cricket match together or listening to the news to stay informed, these moments remind me of why I started this journey in the first place—to create a life filled with purpose, love, and opportunities.

Today, I look back at how far I’ve come with gratitude and pride. From a small village in West Bengal to building a thriving business and a better life in Haryana, this journey has been one of resilience, growth, and hope. Through my work and art of weaving, I’ve found not just financial independence but also a sense of fulfillment that inspires me to dream even bigger for the future.
